The Charlotte Chapter held its Alumni Admissions Reception on Sunday, April 25. The event, held at the home of Nan and Hal Clarke, was a huge success. Over 60 people were in attendance, the weather was great and the Clarke’s backyard was a wonderful setting.

On Wednesday, December 16, the Charlotte Chapter held a Young Alumni Happy Hour at Angry Ale’s in Charlotte. Around 15 alumni gathered for food and drinks on W&L with one condition, all attendees were asked to bring a gift of $10 or less for the Toys for Tots program.

In typical W&L fashion, a few people brought two gifts so the chapter actually collected a total of 20 gifts for the Toys for Tots program. The event turned out to be a very valuable endeavor, in light of an article that came out in the Charlotte paper saying that the Charlotte area is about 40,000 toys short of what it needs for all the charities and children in need.
 
Andy Henson ’02 hooked the chapter up with access to a room at Angry Ale’s (a local favorite), so all were able to have a dedicated area with tables, etc. for folks to hang out and chat over beer, wine and appetizers. 
 
While the goal is to have a few more people attend, the feedback was that everyone enjoyed the opportunity to get together with fellow alums around the holidays.

BRING A TOY FOR TOYS FOR TOTS!

The Charlotte Chapter announces a Young Alumni Happy Hour! The event will be at at Angry Ale’s located at 1518 Montford Drive on December 16, from 6-8pm.

Free beer and appetizers will be provided, but we are asking all attendants to bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots rather than paying for the event.

The Charlotte Chapter will host a special event titled, “An Artful Evening with Bob Trotman ’69,” at the Mint Museum of Art on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.

Join Bob Trotman ’69, renowned sculptor and furniture maker in western North Carolina, for a private showing of his work to the Charlotte Chapter.  Bob will demonstrate his carving techniques and talk with us about how he creates his work.  Throughout his artwork he merges woodcarving with the ideas of existential philosophy to “create a tension between the images of people reflected in the advertising images and our time-bound servitude to nature.”

The event will start at 6pm and include an open bar and appetizers.

Cost for the evening is $15 per person in advance and $20 at the door.

Young Alumni Happy Hour at Brazwell's

The Charlotte Chapter will host a Young Alumni Happy Hour on Wednesday, October 21, at Brazwell’s. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and there will be appetizers and drink specials.

The Charlotte Chapter finished third behind the Rockbridge Chapter and the Birmingham Chapter in the 2008-2009 Mink Conference. The Charlotte Chapter finished with 101.29 points and received special recognition for accumulating more than 100 points during the season.

If you are unfamiliar with the Mink Conference it is designed to provide a little friendly competition amongst chapters of similar demographic make-up will help to invigorate alumni, and will provide camaraderie and commonality of focus that will lead to greater involvement with the University, its current students, and our network of 24,000+ alumni reaching into nearly every corner of the country.
